Death and Functional Outcome After Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage
Using death and functional status as end points, we prospectively analyzed the outcome 6 months after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in 166 patients admitted to an acute-care stroke unit on the first day of their stroke. Seventy-one patients (43%) died, 69 (42%) had a satisfactory outcome, and 26 (16%) had a poor functional outcome. Early (30-day) survival was correlated with morphologic ...
متن کاملNeuroinflammation after intracerebral hemorrhage
Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a particularly severe type of stroke for which no specific treatment has been established yet. Although preclinical models of ICH have substantial methodological limitations, important insight into the pathophysiology has been gained. Mounting evidence suggests an important contribution of inflammatory mechanisms to brain damage and potential repair...
متن کاملHyperglycemia exacerbates brain edema and perihematomal cell death after intracerebral hemorrhage.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hyperglycemia has a deleterious effect on brain ischemia. However, the effect of hyperglycemia in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is not well known. We investigated the effect of hyperglycemia on the development of brain edema and perihematomal cell death in ICH. METHODS Hyperglycemia was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg) in adult Sprague-...
متن کاملNuclear factor-kappaB and cell death after experimental intracerebral hemorrhage in rats.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) is a ubiquitous transcription factor that, when activated, translocates to the nucleus, binds to DNA, and promotes transcription of many target genes. Its activation has been demonstrated in chronic inflammatory conditions, cerebral ischemia, and apoptotic cell death. The present study evaluated the presence and activation of NF-kappaB in...
متن کاملPlasmalemma permeability and necrotic cell death phenotypes after intracerebral hemorrhage in mice.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Traumatic and ischemic brain injury induce plasmalemma permeability and necrosis; however, no studies have examined these aspects of cellular injury in intracerebral hemorrhage models. METHODS In vivo propidium iodide (PI) and YOYO-1 were used to assess plasmalemma damage after collagenase-induced intracerebral hemorrhage in mice. Ex vivo aspartylglutamylvalylaspartic a...
